WHAT IS KIDS 4 KIDS?

How It All Started...Under the direction of their teacher, Beth Davis, the Kids 4 Kids Fill-A-Backpack Campaign was a project that was taken on by the students of the Jack D. Gordon Elementary Community School in Miami, Florida in 1996. The goal of the campaign was to fill new backpacks with school supplies for 500 homeless children living in shelters and attending public schools in Miami-Dade County and Broward County Florida, thus making the life of a child in need a little brighter. Students in the club, as well as other students in the school and community, became so inspired in making a difference for other kids that, at the end of this first annual campaign, 1000 backpacks were collected, filled with school supplies, and delivered to homeless, abused, migrant, and foster children. The second year, 1500 backpacks were collected; the third year, 3000 backpacks were collected.  Over the next 3 years, 4000 backpacks were delivered each year.  August 2002, and 2003 they  deliver 6,000 backpacks to homeless, abused, migrant, and kids, and hospital homebound kids.  They will also delivered backpacks to the 1,000 students in Miami-Dade County's two double "F" schools so that on the first day of school, they will start out with the tools and self-esteem to begin their school year.  In August 2004, Kids 4 Kids will delivered a whopping 8,000 backpacks and 16,000 new books!  August 2005, Kids 4 Kids  delivered  7,000 backpacks and 12,000 new books!  Our plans for 2006 are for 6,000 backpacks and 12,000 books.

That's over 50,000 filled backpacks  and 92,000 new books since 1996!

In 1999, Kids 4 Kids became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
All contributions are tax-deductible!.

Out of their brainstorming, the Kids 4 Kids Club was formed. Twice a month from 7:45-8:30 a.m., students in grades 2, 3, 4, & 5 meet in the school cafeteria to develop projects that they know will help other children. The Jack Gordon Elementary club started with 40 members and has grown to over 300.

Here are some things the Jack D. Gordon Elementary
Kids 4 Kids Club IS PROUD OF!

The FILL-A-BACKPACK Campaign

Halloween Bags
Thanksgiving Baskets
Holiday Party & Adopt A Family Day
Valentine Bags
Some other projects have included making cards for sick children in hospitals, and Birthday cards for homeless kids.

toiletry drives for homeless families, writing letters to soldiers serving overseas, and the collection of toiletries, Beanie Babies, and books for the victims of tornadoes and hurricanes. The theme of the collection is something they need, something to read, and something to hold. Students all felt it didn't matter how old you are, if you lost everything, you would want something to hold on to. They voted that soft, cuddly stuffed toys would make the tornado victims feel better. Each year, hundreds of bags are filled for survivors of such crises.

Kindness Cards
Book Recycling Program

In response to the September 11th terrorist attacks, Kids 4 Kids responded with three projects. First, club members wrote letters to the Heroes and sent them to New York. Next, they thought it would be a good idea to help heal their own community. They illustrated postcards with patriotic pictures and a message that said, "Kids 4 Kids says rejoice in song." It had verses from patriotic songs on the post card. Cards were mailed to family and friends to show their patriotism. Finally, club members designed peace buttons that had pictures depicting their visions for peace. The text on the outside of the buttons said, "Kids 4 Kids says, Let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with me." Not only do they wear their button as a sign of peace, they sent hundreds of buttons to our troops to wear to show that we care for them and appreciate the work they do to keep us safe.   Here are 4 of the 16 designs.
